A few minutes later, he came back out, and she gasped in surprise and looked away, her face growing warm.
âYouâre naked!â she accused.
He had wrapped the blanket around his waist, leaving his chest exposed.
âNot the best parts,â he teased.
âIâm sure I donât know what you mean.â
She peeked at him, then looked away primly, and he laughed. His chest was smooth and tanned, something she hadnât expected, and she was having trouble looking away. She swallowed hard as she tried not to stare, remembering how it felt to be pressed close against him, as sheâd been only a few minutes before. Warmth spread from her stomach, and she half expected her heart to pound through her chest.
âYou might as well look.â Doug said, âWho knows how long weâll be stuck here.â
âIâve not seen a man so free with his person in front of a lady before this,â she admitted.
âYouâve never seen a man naked before?â he asked.
âI did not say that,â she wondered if it were possible to set her cheeks on fire from blushing.
âOh? Then you have?â He came closer and stood in front of her. âSo, there is more to Miss Prim and Proper Elizabeth Gates than meets the eye, eh?â
His closeness seemed to be daring her to look. She snuck a glance at his chest and lowered her eyes to the floor, feeling her cheeks grow warmer. She shifted in the hay, suddenly feeling quite restless. Her heart was starting to pound so loudly in her chest; she was certain he could hear it.
âI want to hear about this,â Doug teased.
âIâm sure I donât know what youâre talking about,â she protested.
She was not going to discuss her spying on the field hands with him. Surprised at how comfortable she felt with him despite his being half-naked, she realized her anger had disappeared when he hadnât said âI told you soâ about riding Black. She was also shocked at how much she wanted to touch his chest. There was something very inviting about all that exposed flesh. Her fingers itched, and just as she was about to give in and reach out her hand, he moved away.
Her fingers curled together under the blanket, and she was glad heâd moved before sheâd made a fool out of herself. Honestly, how could she have been so silly? She was no simpering female, anxious to be compromised by a rutting male. Her spine straightened, and she turned her face away.
Doug sat down next to her on the haystack, far enough away that they couldnât touch easily, which was quite proper considering their circumstances. Still, she couldnât help feeling a wee bit disappointed that he wasnât closer.
âI insist you tell me,â he said. âIt sounds like it might be an interesting story and looks like weâre stuck here for a while.â
âDid you grow up in New York City?â She said in a desperate attempt to change the subject.
His laugh was rich and melodious in response, letting her know heâd seen right through her. Instead of making her any more uncomfortable, he chose to follow her conversation direction.
